Mythologizing the Bible: Episode 1

Reflections for the 1st Sunday of Advent (Cycle C)

What happens when we take a hard look at the values we hold and ask if they stand on their own merit? What would it look like to ground our choices in reason and compassion rather than fear or obligation? This isn’t about dismantling faith—it’s about reclaiming the power of clear thinking, strong values, and purposeful living.

Welcome to the Mythologizing the Bible podcast, where we’ll be taking a look at three readings from the Christian Bible through the lens of “sacred myth.”

As we reflect on the readings for the 1st Sunday in Advent, we’re going to look beyond the traditional Christian narrative to uncover a few messages that should resonate with all of us, regardless of our religious background… or lack thereof.

The readings this week offer plenty of fodder for reflection, with their mix of vague prophecies, unexamined authority, and fear-based motivation. But when we cut through the supernatural layers, we uncover something much deeper—a call to live intentionally, to question the basis of our beliefs, and to make the most of our time in the here and now!

So grab a comfy seat, a glass of your favorite beverage, and let’s look at some ancient stories together in this edition of Mythologizing the Bible, where we’ll be exploring the readings for the 1st Sunday in Advent, Cycle C of the Roman Catholic Lectionary.
